Where the grid actually bends.

Forty years of load data, published with the method, the caveats and conclusions the partner did not see in advance.

The brief

Turn a contested data set into a useful public analysis.

Northgate held four decades of regional grid-load records and wanted to support a better discussion about resilience. Credibility depended on allowing the analysis to reach its own conclusion.

The Studio’s data desk agreed the research question, disclosure terms and publication method before receiving the files. Northgate reviewed only factual descriptions of its systems.

Approach

Agree the question first

The team tested regional peaks against weather, industrial demand and interconnector capacity. Missing years and changes in measurement were documented before the visual story was designed.

Delivery

Show the working

The main analysis used six annotated charts, a plain-language method and downloadable tables. An independent academic reviewed the model, with their comments published unedited.

Result

Useful enough to cite

Median dwell reached 7 minutes 12 seconds. The analysis was cited by 24 third parties, including two parliamentary committees, and the data package was downloaded 3,480 times.
