The panelled Montlior boardroom at dawn, with an open folio on the table and the Meridale rooftops beyond the window.

The questions we are asked most.

Independence, rates, the Studio, data and production — answered plainly, including the answers that lose us business.

Frequently asked questions

If the answer you need is not here, the partnerships desk will give you a direct one. We would rather lose a booking early than argue about a policy later.

Independence & standards

Does advertising influence what Montlior News publishes?

No. Montlior Media has been a separate company since 1984, with its own board. We have no access to editorial systems, embargoed copy or forward news schedules, and no route by which to raise a commercial concern with an editor. The Group publishes an editorial independence charter that binds both companies.

Can I see an article before it publishes?

No — not your own coverage, not a competitor’s, not a sector piece. The only copy any partner sees in advance is Studio work they have themselves commissioned, and then only for factual correction about their own business.

Will you warn me if my campaign is running beside bad news?

Yes. Category exclusions are applied at booking, and the platform will pull a unit automatically from a page that meets our sensitive-content rules. We will also tell you afterwards, unprompted, if we pulled something — and we will not charge for the impressions we withheld.

What will you refuse to sell?

Anything designed to be mistaken for Montlior journalism. Beyond that: political advertising during a Coravian election period, advertising aimed at children, gambling, high-cost short-term credit, and any creative that flashes, autoplays audio or interrupts a page a reader is reading.

Do you disclose when a campaign sits next to related reporting?

Yes. Where a partner’s campaign is adjacent to Montlior reporting about that partner or its sector, the adjacency is disclosed on the page itself. Neither company gets a veto over the other’s decision.

Buying & rates

Do you publish a rate card?

We issue one on request, and it is the same card for every buyer. There is no volume ladder, no agency discount and no negotiated floor — a first-time advertiser and a twenty-year partner pay the same rate for the same position.

Is there a minimum spend?

Display and print carry a two-week minimum flight. Studio commissions start at CVM 45,000 because that is what it costs to report a piece properly. There is no minimum on a conversation.

Do you work with agencies?

Constantly, and we are happy to be briefed by one. We do ask that a named person on the client side is party to the first conversation, because the question we need answered — what has to happen in the business — is rarely in the media brief.

Can I buy Montlior programmatically?

No. Every unit on our pages is sold directly, by position, to a named advertiser. We do not run open exchanges, we do not accept audience segments built off our readers elsewhere, and our inventory is not resold.

What is the cancellation policy?

It varies by placement and is published in full on the specifications page. In short: five working days for digital display, ten for print and newsletters, four weeks for out-of-home, twelve weeks for a summit partnership. Studio commissions carry 50 per cent at brief.

The Branded Content Studio

Who actually writes branded content?

The Studio’s own staff — fifty-one writers, designers, photographers, data journalists and editors. None of them have ever filed for Montlior News, and Studio staff are contractually barred from moving into the newsroom for two years after leaving.

Do I get approval over the copy?

You get one round of factual review, over statements of fact about your own organisation. You do not get approval over the argument, the sources, the headline or the conclusions. Partners who need that should commission an agency, and we will say so at the brief stage.

How is it labelled?

A label above the headline reading “Paid content — produced by Montlior Media Studio for [partner]”, set at the same size as the standfirst, on every piece, in every format, without exception or variation.

How long does a commission take?

Six to ten weeks for a reported feature, ten to fourteen for a film, sixteen for a data piece with original analysis. We will not compress reporting to hit a campaign date; we would rather move the date.

Data & reporting

How are your audience figures produced?

Readership comes from an annual survey of 9,400 adults, fielded by an independent research house and weighted to the national workforce. Digital reach is measured server-side and de-duplicated with a first-party identifier. Nothing on the audience page is modelled, and the method is published alongside it.

What do you report during a campaign?

Delivered impressions by position, viewable rate, engaged rate, and — for Studio work — read depth and dwell. Newsletters are reported weekly on unique opens against delivered mail. You get the numbers we have, including the disappointing ones.

Do you use third-party tracking?

Ours is first-party only. We accept measurement tags from six approved vendors, provided they set no third-party cookies and add no more than two requests to the page. We do not permit cross-site identity graphs, fingerprinting or data collected off our pages.

Production

What file formats do you accept?

AVIF, WebP, JPEG and PNG for display; PDF/X-4 for print; ProRes masters with H.264 deliverables for film. Full dimensions, weights, colour profiles and ink limits are on the specifications page.

How early do you need the files?

Three working days for digital display, four for print and newsletters by midday, fifteen for out-of-home. Send them earlier if you can — the production desk will check a file at any point before booking, free, and tell you what to change.

Why was my file rejected?

Almost always one of six reasons: it imitates editorial, it is over weight, the colour profile is wrong for the stock, type is below the minimum, motion breaks the accessibility rules, or the click destination changed after booking. All six are listed with fixes on the specifications page.
